SERMON LETTER

What is a successful leader?  With state and federal elections coming up this fall we once again have to choose which candidates will be the best leader for us.  What character traits will drive your decision this year?

While most of us will never run for political office we are all called to be leaders in some way, whether we want it or not.  It could be at work, managing employees.  It could be at home, raising children.  It could be at church or in your local community, where younger people look up to you for direction and guidance.  The bottom line is someone is always looking up to us in some way.  The question is, will you be a successful leader or not?

Sunday we will be examining some interactions that Jesus had with his disciples and how he impacted their life in a powerful way.  By understanding what Jesus did and why, we can better equip ourselves to be the Godly leaders that he wants us to be.  Young or old these principles apply to you and can greatly enhance how God uses you to impact your friends and families for Christ.  Looking forward to seeing you Sunday as we explore the leadership example of Jesus found in John 1: 35-32.

In Christ,

Pastor Scott

PREPARING FOR SUNDAY: SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

  • What is a successful leader to you?
  • Is there a difference between worldly leadership and Christian leadership?
  • What illustration did Jesus use to define his style of leadership?

John 10: 7-11 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  • How does a good shepherd act compared to a bad shepherd?
  • What role does service play in Christian leadership?

Mark 9: 30-36-They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

  • What did the apostle Paul use as his guide for leadership?

1 Corinthians 10:31-33 & 11:1So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.  11 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

  • When you die, what do you want people to say about you as a leader?
  • How can we pray for you?
