Why Church Matters: Learn to Serve

“What could I do to help?”
“What do you need?”
“What has to be done?”
“I wonder if I could do something to make this better?”

These are the questions that followers of Jesus ought to ask every day and in every circumstance.  If you are like me, more often than I want to admit, these questions are not nearly so selfless and Godly.  “Why does this have to be done now?” “Can’t anyone else do this?”  The breaking of sinful selfishness has more to do with being a true follower of Jesus than almost anything else.  Jesus staked his reputation on this change in us;

Mat 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

In fact, Jesus taught that serving others was essential for every true follower.

Mar 10:42-45, Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.  For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Paul addressed the fact that only in selfless serving can you become like Christ. [right attitude is essential]

Php 2:3-5, Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.  Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.

Church is where you and your family are to learn to serve.

If you find yourself spiritually stagnated, you must return in attitude and action to serving.

EVERYONE NEEDS A BREAK FOR A TIME BUT YEARS OF SIDELINE SITTING WILL MAKE A SWAMP OF YOUR SPRING OF LIVING WATER.

You need an outlet and this world needs help!

Sunday, I will teach on the amazing reasons why you serving in some way will fulfill your life in Christ.

PREPARING FOR SUNDAY – THINGS TO DO

  • PLAN TO ATTEND A WORSHIP SERVICE -THIS IS A MUST FOR ALL CHURCH MEMBERS WANTING TO GROW.
  • PLAN TO GO TO A SMALL GROUP.
  • PRAY FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR CHURCH.
  • READ THE SCRIPTURES AND REFLECT ON THE QUESTIONS.
  • INVITE SOMEONE TO COME WITH YOU.

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

  1. Describe a time where serving others brought you real satisfaction and happiness?

Joh 13:16-17, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

  2. Why is Christ-like service as much about attitude as action?

Php 2:1-8, Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  3. Describe ways families can intentionally model and teach servanthood?
  4. How can you as a church intentionally model and teach servanthood?
  5. How does serving keep you from spiritual stagnation?
  6. Why does becoming a spectator lead to bitter boredom and stagnation?

Mat 16:24-25, Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

  7. What needs around you could you serve to honor God?

Mat 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
