Loving God in Reverse: Haughty Eyes

Dear Friends,

Sin always has a deadly affect but some sins are so destructive even God expresses His distinct hatred for them. Religious people are strangely selective about what they consider “big” sins. Jesus said hypocrites always focus on safe externals. Religious pot washing and gnat straining about rules, focusing on cultural preferences over clear scriptural truths about sin.

Clear truth is replaced with   arrogant rants about “Godly music” (music they like), haircuts and wardrobes for worship. Add to this various political opinions and unsupported parenting advice and the result is that important teaching about sin gets conspicuously ignored.

The sins that cripple us and betray God are left uncomforted.  God does hate sin.  It is surprising which ones He singles out. Some sins must especially be backed away from or you will never live a life of love for God and others.

Here is one list:

Pro 6:16-19  There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17  Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.

This Sunday ill teach on the haughty eyes. What this is and how do we fall into its practice. Unless this sin is recognized and turned from we cannot go forward in holiness.

I really pray you will come and listen with an open heart.

Blessings,  Joe

Preparing for Sunday

Please prayerfully read the following scripture and consider the questions.

  1. Describe a time you felt looked down on?
  2. How did it effect you?
  3. Why do you think God hates this so much?
  4. How do we fall into having haughty {arrogant eyes} without realizing it?
  5. How much does the desire to impress others motivate our choices?

Jas 2:1-9 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of 2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there 3  and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,” 4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court? 7  Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called? 8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR BROTHER AS YOURSELF. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

  6. How can practicing hospitality combat the haughty eyes? 1Pe 4:8-9  Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaint.

Rom 12:13  contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

  7. How could these verses combat the haughty eyes?

Isa 51:1  “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, Who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn And to the quarry from which you were dug.

1Jn 3:17  But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?
