Why is Change So Hard?

We all know we have areas where we need to change for the good. These changes are almost always in our best interest.  The changes God moves us toward always bring Him the most glory. So, why do we ignore and often resist the need to change?

This Sunday, we will explore what gets in the way and why we get stuck and stay stuck.

I want you to ask God to remind you of somewhere you need to change and consider why you have not moved far or at all. God is committed to bring you to a place to be the most like His son you can be in all your relationships. He wants to Change you entirely.

1Th 5:23  Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The first step to change is to change your mind. To change one’s mind, you must first identify the lie that keeps you from acting.  Please prayerfully consider the following scriptures and question through your own life.

PREPARING FOR SUNDAY: SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

  • Why is change so hard?
  • What are the most common excuses for not changing?

1Co 10:12-13  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

  • What areas is God interested in changing?

1Th 5:22-24  abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

  • How can you be sure God will help you change?

Eph 3:20  Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,How does not wanting to admit your wrong hinder change?

  • How does not wanting to admit your wrong hinder change?

Pro 12:15  The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

Pro 16:2  All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the LORD weighs the motives.

  • Share an example of stubbornly refusing to admit you’re wrong?
  • How can fear hold you back from change?
  • Why are clear goals essential for change?

Phi 3:12-14  Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  • What concrete plans have you made to move toward change?
  • What goals have you made?
